Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, 8/1/2001 Addressing The Problem Of Juvenile Bullying This report outlines bullying and how it contributed to recent school shootings and other forms of juvenile crime. The report also defines the three forms of bullying: physical, verbal, and psychological, and ends with the Bullying Prevention Program, an initiative designed to reduce bullying by intervening at the school, classroom, and individual levels. Peter Stringham M.D. Adolescent Violence Prevention This website, from an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Boston University, is a collection of facts and advice that Boston teenagers, their parents, and anti-violence specialists have taught him over the years. American Psychological Association and the National Association for the Education of Young Children Adults and Children Together (ACT) Against Violence This violence-prevention campaign focuses on adults who raise, care for, and teach children aged 0 to 8. Also available in Spanish, the website has advice for parents and teachers to teach nonviolent problem solving and to create positive role models for children. Links to their radio and TV ads are included as well. ARISE Foundation ARISE Life Management Skills Program The ARISE Foundation has developed a statistically proven life management skills program for at-risk youth in grades pre-K to 12. Their site offers instructor manuals and supplemental materials for 40 life skills topics specifically designed for students who have yet to learn how to learn. William Mastrosimone Bang Bang You're Dead (a play) This play is designed for students to perform with minimal production values. The script, as well as follow-up discussion questions, can be downloaded for free. North Carolina Dept. of Crime Control and Public Safety/N.C. State Center for the Prevention of School Violence Established in 1993, the Center serves as a primary point of contact for dealing with the problem of school violence. The Center focuses on ensuring that schools are safe and secure so that every student is able to attend a school that is free of fear and conducive to learning. Dr. Fenichel's Current Topics in Psychology Children and Violence This former President of the NY State Psychological Association has created an educational website that has great links to studies, teaching aids, and organizations that deal with children and violence. Committee for Children Committee for Children is a nonprofit organization that works to link academic achievement with social and emotional competency. CFC has programs focusing on youth violence, bullying, child abuse, and personal safety. National PTA Community Violence Prevention Kit Resources are listed in this kit on building effective coalitions, techniques for conflict management, and information on peer mediation to assist in various outreach efforts. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, 10/1/1996 Conflict Resolution Education This PDF file is a 144-page report developed for educators, juvenile justice practitioners, and others in youth-serving organizations to heighten awareness of conflict resolution education and its potential to help settle disputes peacefully in a variety of settings. National Research Council Firearms and Violence: A Critical Review by The Committee on Law and Justice National Research Council This book, for adults, discusses gun control and ownership with a critical eye. It explores the effects of firearms on violence and the effects of different violence control policies. Using conventional standards of science to examine these topics, the book assesses the strengths and weaknesses of current information, and suggests ways in which it can be improved. The National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children Recognizing the Signs of a Grieving Child by Rebecca Roberts Konarz, MSW, LSW This article offers warning signs of a child affected by a traumatic experience or event that resulted in the loss a loved one. It points out the signs for two age groups: infants/preverbal toddlers and those children who are toddlers, preschoolers, and school age. Educators for Social Responsibility Resolving Conflict Creatively Program The Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP) is a comprehensive school-based program in conflict resolution and inter-group relations that provides a model for preventing violence and creating caring and peaceable communities of learning. National Fire Protection Association Risk Watch: Unintentional Injuries Risk Watch is a comprehensive injury prevention program available for use in schools that gives children and their families the skills and knowledge they need to create safer homes and communities. This school-based curriculum is divided into five age-appropriate teaching modules from Pre-K to grade 8, with specific materials written for parents on firearm injury prevention. U.S. Secret Service and the U.S. Department of Education, 5/1/2002 Safe School Initiative (Final Report): Implications for the Prevention of School Attacks in the United States The Secret Service and the Department of Education studied 37 incidents of school shootings and school attacks occurring in 1974 to 2000, in an effort to see the causes of these tragedies and to explore what might be done to prevent future attacks. The report states that there is no easy solution but prevention is hopeful. National Crime Prevention Council Scruff's Gun Safety Rules Scruff (the younger counterpart to McGruff the Crime Dog) presents a message about gun safety in a fun puzzle for kids. Committee for Children Second Step: A Violence Prevention Program Second Step is a school-based social skills curriculum for preschool through junior high that teaches children to change the attitudes and behaviors that contribute to violence. The Noodle Head Network Staying Safe Around Guns (Video) This video was developed for grades 4 through 7 by a coalition of organizations with a wide range of opinions about firearms. The video teaches kids what to do (and not do) if they come across a gun or if they find themselves in a situation where someone is handling a gun improperly. Northern County Psychiatric Associates, 1/17/2001 Suicide and the School An informative website from a group of psychiatrists that offers recognition and intervention for suicidal students in the school setting. The Noodle Head Network Suicide: A Guide To Prevention (Video) This video takes a kid-friendly approach to intervening in suicide situations that teens are exposed to. It shows what to do and what not to do if a fellow teen is talking about suicide or showing warning signs. This video is also an excellent training tool for professionals who want to hone their skills in talking with kids. Southern Poverty Law Center Teaching Tolerance Teaching Tolerance is a national education project dedicated to helping teacher's foster equity, respect, and understanding in the classroom and beyond. Alan Madison Productions The Last Shot (video) The Last Shot is a hunting safety education film that documents a fatal firearm accident involving two teenage boys and captures the devastating emotional impact. The film shows the seriousness with which firearms must be handled and the importance of learning basic firearm safety. The Other End of The Barrel (video) Shirley Lochowitz was a police officer whose son, Nicholas, was accidentally shot in their basement by a friend. This video recreates the day of her son's shooting, the impact on Nicholas and the family, and discusses safe gun storage. American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation ThinkFirst focuses on preventing brain, spinal cord, and other traumatic injuries by providing educational programs targeted to kids and young adults. American Journal of Public Health, 10/15/2004 Urban and Rural Intentional Firearm Deaths This study analyzed the differences in urban and rural intentional firearm deaths, including suicide. The intent was to better discern the relative risk of intentional firearm death in urban versus rural areas. ETR Publishing Violence Prevention Pamphlets ETR Publishing produces and distributes educational brochures and videos on a range of health related topics.
